Run N Fun Race Team Bio
Back to Race Team Roster

Tim O’Brien

Like the EverReady Bunny Rabbit, Tim has been at it since
he was 10 years old when his dad signed him up the
Fairfax Virginia neighborhood swim team. Tim continued
his competitive swim career through high school at St.
Cloud Apollo. Burn out and working to pay for college
caused Tim to drop off the St. Cloud State Swim Team,
however the desire to train and stay in shape found Tim
out on the road running over 100 miles per week. One
day in his junior year Tim ran with a group of guys ho
were out for a group run. After several miles with the
group (turned out to be the St. Cloud State Cross
Country) the group invited Tim to go out for the team.
Happy to be back on a competitive team, Tim ran track
and cross country the next two years and made the team
that went to NAIA finishing 16th.

Following graduation Tim hooked up with a group of post
college competitive runners who wanted to continue to
race and improve their times by running a series of
developing competitive road races, thanks to the MDRA,
Twin Cities Track Club, Rick Recker, Ron Daws, Jeff Winter
and Rick Kleymann to name a few of the pioneers. Tim
ended up being a “back of the pack” runner with this elite
group but did manage a 2:25 marathon, 31:50 10K, 1:09
half marathon and a 15 minute 5K and a couple of first
place finishes – when no one showed up.

After almost 30 years, Tim continues to run with this same
group of runners, now the age group elite, and hasn’t
improved on his “back of the pack” position. Also Tim hasn’
t gotten any smarter after over 100,000 miles of running.
He has now added bike workouts, gone back to his
swimming roots, added weight workouts and also
recently became an empty nester. With more time to
train…yikes…he is now a self proclaimed triathlete. Biking
over 150 miles per week, running over 50 miles and
swimming 3 miles….Tim is either waiting to wear out or
training for an Ironman which he plans to do in a couple
of years when he turns 55.

So if you see Tim out on the roads, just smile and tell him
to turn around, go home and get some rest. He will last
longer that way.
